Rebuild the
knee. Skip the
surgery.

The Knee Lab pairs a Doctor of Physical Therapy background with evidence-based ATG knee ability training to get active adults and athletes back to squatting, running, and playing. The knee gets built up, not just rested.

The Old Playbook

Rest.
Ice.
Surgery.
Repeat.

If you've got a cranky knee, an MRI showing a tear, or a surgeon already talking dates, you've probably heard some version of the same advice: rest it, ice it, maybe try some passive PT, and if it doesn't improve, operate.

The problem is that rest alone doesn't rebuild tissue capacity. It just buys time while the muscles around the joint get weaker, so when you do try to get back to sport, the knee is even less prepared for load than before.

  • Pain that flares every time you squat, kneel, or take the stairs
  • A tear on the scan and a surgery date on the calendar, with no other plan offered
  • Months of "taking it easy" that leave the knee weaker, not stronger
  • Fear of re-injury the moment you try to run, cut, or jump again

The Knee Lab exists for the active adults and athletes who want a different path, one built on loading the knee correctly instead of avoiding it.

The Knee Lab Method

Four steps.
One rebuilt knee.

01

Standards Assessment

We baseline your knee against the same movement standards used with athletes: flexion range, strength, and control. The plan gets built on that data, not guesswork.

02

Personalized Programming

You get a Google Sheets program built directly off your assessment findings. It's a plan for your knee specifically, updated as you progress, not a generic handout.

03

Coaching Calls

Monthly zoom sessions with Dr. Ken to progress your load, refine technique, and adjust the plan the moment something changes.

04

Community + Accountability

Lifetime access to the Knee Lab group chat means you're never troubleshooting a flare-up or a plateau alone.

Male Knee/Ankle Standards

The 15 standards every
knee is tested against.

Before we write a single day of programming, we baseline your knee against these movement standards, the same ones used to track progress with every Knee Lab client.

  1. 01Patrick Step — 100% BW × 10 reps on 6" box @ 31X1
  2. 02Poliquin Step — 75% BW × 10 reps on 6" box @ 31X1
  3. 03Petersen Step — 50% BW × 10 reps on 6" box @ 21X1
  4. 04Flat Foot / Wedge ATG Split Squat — 75% BW × 5 on flat ground @32X1
  5. 05Pistol / Shotgun Squat — 25% BW × 6 @31X1
  6. 06KOT Squat — 10 reps @ 2 inches of padding @4131
  7. 07Couch Stretch — 20 reps each leg, no stretch
  8. 08Reverse Nordic — 5 reps, shoulders to 6 inches of padding
  1. 09VMO Squat — 25% BW × 20 reps @3130
  2. 10ATG Back Squat — 100% BW + chains × 3 @31X1
  3. 11ATG Front Squat — 75% BW + chains × 3 @31X1
  4. 12Nordic — 1 eccentric, 1 MSL, 1 Ben Patrick
  5. 13Slant Straight Leg Calf Raise — 25% BW × 12 reps @21X2
  6. 14Slant KOT Calf Raise — 25% BW × 12 reps @21X2
  7. 15Tib Bar Raise — 20% BW × 20 reps @11X1

Standards shown reflect the male knee/ankle testing battery. Your assessment is adapted to your body, history, and goals. This is the framework, not a one-size-fits-all script.

Kenny Walters, Physical Therapist and Personal Trainer
Outpatient Hospital Cash-Based Care

About Dr. Ken

Research-backed.
Athlete-tested.

Kenny built his foundation with a Bachelor of Exercise Science from Youngstown State University. He then spent five years as an online form coach inside Ben Patrick's Athletic Truth Group, rising to become one of the few L3 Certified ATG Coaches in the world.

He returned to Youngstown State for his Doctorate of Physical Therapy, rounding out that training with real clinical experience across outpatient, hospital, and cash-based care settings. That combination is what shaped his own practice, the Youngstown Knee Lab.

Between his years coaching with ATG and his own clients at the Knee Lab, Kenny has helped close to thousands of people of every age and background, guiding successful recoveries from ACL tears, meniscus tears, osteoarthritis, and other knee issues.

He especially loves teaching the data behind non-surgical recovery, using his platform to share research and real client results that give people going through knee injuries a reason to hope.

Questions

Before you
book a call.

Do I need to live near Boardman, Ohio?

No. Most Knee Lab members train fully virtually, anywhere in the world, through monthly zoom coaching and personalized programming. In-person sessions are also available if you're local to the Youngstown / Boardman area.

Will this replace my surgeon's recommendation?

The Knee Lab is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment, and Dr. Ken will never tell you to ignore your physician. What this program does is build the strength and capacity of the tissue around your knee, using evidence-based training. Many members use it to inform a fuller conversation with their surgeon about their options, before or after any procedure.

What is ATG, exactly?

ATG (Athletic Truth Group) is a training methodology developed by Ben Patrick, focused on building knee resilience through full-range, progressively loaded movement instead of avoiding the ranges that cause pain. Dr. Ken is a Certified ATG Coach, one of a limited number worldwide.

How is this different from the physical therapy I've already tried?

Traditional PT often leans on passive modalities like ice, stim, and gentle stretching, with a short course of visits. The Knee Lab combines Dr. Ken's Doctor of Physical Therapy background with ongoing, progressively loaded personal training and ATG-based programming, so your knee keeps adapting long after the initial assessment.

I've already had surgery. Can this still help?

Yes. Many members join post-surgery to rebuild strength, range, and confidence the operation alone doesn't restore.

How do I get started?
